We started by reading a ATDPTI book called "An absolutely true diary of a part time Indian" While reading this we got to know the different cultures, but it also made us think and doubt were do we come from? what tribe do I belong to? From the inspiration of the book we interviewed one of our classmates and we had to make a poem about them, we had to write, and we also performed rules and skits in a exhibition performance. |
House on Mango StreetOur first mini project was to read "The house on Mango Street" and make it come to life by making sound effects and acting out some of the words. Our teachers Dr.P and Ms.Soler created groups from 4-5 students. Each group had to read vignettes from the story and act them out.In my group I had Alexis, Elizabeth, and Jackob as partners we didn't know each other except for Jackob and I. This helped us to comunicate and learn a little bit about each other. We came out with a lot of different and good Ideas. I think this project was very fun and a great one to start off the year.
Self PortraitWe had to take a picture that described us and that had something to do with our poems. My dad is a truck driver and he works all the way in Dallas and he come home every 4 months sometimes even longer. While i was a kid i used to travel all around the Unites States with my mom and my dad in my dad's truck all the time. Almost all of my great memories take place in my dads truck this is why i decided to take this picture i feel like it looks if i was looking at my past. You can't really see it but i'm holding a heart with my left hand and on the right side there's my dad's truck, and the street has a dead end. That's why i think this picture makes me feel like if i was looking at my past because i loved it and my dads truck is there.

Dialogical InterviewFor this project the morning and the afternoon class got combined again. Ms. Soler and Dr.P started picking out names from some popsicles sticks that we made that day in he morning, then they paired us up with another student. As partners we had to interview each other from the beginning of our lifes till that day in just 20 minutes. Dr. P gave us a paper with some questions to ask our partner if we were struggling. Victor started asking me questions about my life, I did too. I got to know Victor in less the 2 days that's awesome right!
Then we started to brainstorm some ideas for the poems. I had to write about Victor's Life and he had to write about mine. I really enjoyed this project for two reasons. One i got to know a new person, I got to now his past, his happy moments, the sad and bad ones, and all his good memories I got to know Victor's life. The second reason is because i got to remember all my beautiful memories when I was younger and that is just why I really liked this project. 8th Graders critique sessionAfter writing our first draft of our poems we had to go to the middle school to get critique from the eight graders. We also had to critique their essay. There was a new girl that day, everyone got their partners and got to critique each others writing, since she was new she didn't have an essay so i couldn't critique her essay. She was so nice to critique my essay without me critiquing hers. I got a lot of feed back. that helped me a lot because i got to improve my poem.

ExhibitionFor the Exhibition we all had the choice to do whatever we wanted to and to chose our groups. In my group I had Arianna, Elizabeth, Verenice, Vanessa, Melissa, Alexis, Miguel, and Justin. We all come from different tribes, and cultures. Since half of us are Mexicans and Half of us are Americans we decided to say what we usually eat, do, listen, and celebrate from both american and mexican cultures It was very fun to put everything together. This is what we said:
SPANISH BILINGUAL ENGLISH Dia de la Independencia Celebrations 4th of July Tacos & Burritos Cultural Foods Burers & Fries Arroz con Leche Sweets S'mores Dia de los Muertos Spiritual Rememberance Halloween Mariachi Music Country Pesos Money Dollars Verde, Rojo, Blanco Nationality Red, White, Blue We are part time american We are part time Mexicans And together we are ONE! 4.What did you learn about collaboration? Cooperating and collaborating in group work will make your work succesful. you have to put your best because you want to be proud of your work you also want others to be proud of you and your work. 5.What’s one moment from this project that you want to remember? I want to remember everything, From beginning to end. I want to remember all the little things that made this project possible. Getting to know each other from the beginning of their lifes is very important for me. The exhibbition was the best part because we ot to show ourparents and friends how hard we worked together towards this project. |
